Man faces court on assault charge

A Canadian man has been remanded in custody over an assault that left a French doctor fighting for his life.

Simon Mercier, of Avenue Compognon in Quebec, appeared at Dublin District Court charged with assaulting Guillane Osterstock at Dublin's Temple Lane South, Temple Bar, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The Courts Service said Judge Angela Ni Chonduin remanded the 23-year-old in prison until Wednesday, when he is due to appear in Cloverhill Court.

Gardai said Mr Osterstock, who was living and working in Dublin, was seriously injured in the incident at about 12.45am and was taken to St James's Hospital.

He was later transferred to Beaumont, where he remains in a critical condition.
