A man has died a day after being discovered unconscious in a street following an alleged assault, gardai have said.

The dead man, aged 54, was found on Lower Strand Street in Tramore, Co Waterford after an altercation with another man at about 2.15am on Saturday.

A man in his 20s was arrested at the scene and was detained at the local Garda station.

Gardai said the victim was rushed to University Hospital Waterford where he was pronounced dead in the early hours of Sunday.

The State Pathologist's office has been notified and a post-mortem examination is due to take place.

Gardai appealed for witnesses to an altercation in the Lower Strand Street area of Tramore in the early hours of Saturday or for anyone who was in the area between 1.30am and 2.30am on that day to come forward.
