Man held after Kilkenny killing

One man died and another is being treated in hospital after a house party turned violent.

A third man remains in custody over the stabbing incident after being arrested at the scene - an apartment in Larchfield Court, Kilkenny.

The dead man has been named locally as Kieran Monaghan, 21, from Durrow, Co Laois.

Officers were called to the apartment shortly before 1.30am on Wednesday after receiving a call to say a stabbing had taken place.

A 27-year-old man, also found with stab wounds, was taken to St Luke's Hospital. It is not believed that his injuries are life-threatening.

Gardai said a third man who was in the apartment when they arrived was arrested.

The 35-year-old is being detained at Kilkenny Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The investigation is centred on the possibility that a violent row broke out during a party at the rented apartment.

The scene was sealed off during the day for technical examination by Garda forensic experts.

State pathologist Marie Cassidy carried out a post-mortem examination.
