Man held over huge cannabis haul

A 300kg haul of cannabis has been seized after the Garda drugs squad stopped a truck on the M9.

The lorry was taken back to Dublin Port where it was searched with the help of Customs officers.

Gardai said the cannabis, which included both resin and herb, has an estimated street value of 1.7 million euro.

A 33-year-old man was arrested and taken to Store Street Garda Station for questioning under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act.

The truck was pulled over on the motorway in Kildare on Monday. The arrested man is Lithuanian.

The Revenue's Customs Service said there was 270kg of cannabis resin and 7kg of herb on the truck.

It said the drugs were concealed in a consignment of tiles which had arrived in Dublin Port from Spain.
