Man held over Portlaoise murder

A man has been arrested by detectives investigating a four-year-old murder.

The remains of Thomas Thompson were discovered in Dysart, Portlaoise, in January 2008.

The British father of five, known as Tommy, had disappeared from his rented home nine months earlier.

Mr Thompson, 59, was originally from Yorkshire and had worked as a plastering contractor in Ireland for several years.

He was reported missing from his home in Borris Road on April 20, 2007.

Garda confirmed a man in his 30s was arrested in Ballymote, Co Sligo, in relation to the investigation.

He is being detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

Two German men who worked with the plasterer were previously charged in court for theft from Mr Thompson's home.
