Man quizzed on post office raid bid

A man has been arrested over an attempted post office robbery.

The 25-year-old is being questioned at Wicklow Garda Station over the foiled raid in Arklow on Tuesday afternoon.

The suspect was arrested in Ashford on Tuesday night and is currently being detained under the provisions of Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act 1939.

A man entered the post office and produced what was believed to be a firearm but fled empty-handed when he spotted gardai nearby.

Elsewhere, gardai are continuing to investigate two separate raids.

Two men carrying a gun and a hammer held up and threatened staff in Lismore, Co Waterford, at 10am on Tuesday before making off with a cash bag filled with documents - believing it was money.

Two suspects were later arrested.

In an earlier incident, two men armed with knives held up the post office in Avoca, Co Wicklow.

Gardai said the pair threatened staff before escaping on foot with about 2,000 euro in cash.
