Man released in ATM raid inquiry

One of three men from the north arrested when gardai foiled an attempt to steal a cash machine has been released without charge.

Raiders bulldozed the cash machine out of the front wall of an AIB branch in Co Kerry using heavy machinery in the early hours of Saturday morning.

As gardai arrived at the scene on Main Street, Castleisland, two suspects fled in a van.

The driver attempted to ram the Garda patrol car before the van was abandoned approximately 10km outside Castleisland near a farm.

They were chased on foot by two gardai and arrested after a violent struggle.

In a follow-up operation a third man was arrested in connection with the incident in Listowel.

A Garda spokesman said the 45-year-old man from Co Fermanagh was freed in the early hours of this morning.

A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

A Garda spokesman later confirmed two men in their 20s who were detained in Killarney had been charged in relation to the incident.

They are expected to appear before a special sitting of Killorglin District Court.
