Man stabbed to death in early morning city street attack

A 28-year-old man has died of stab wounds following an altercation with another man in the early hours of the morning.

Gardai arrived at the scene on New Street in Waterford City shortly before 3.30am in response to a call from a member of the public.

The stabbed man was discovered and was then taken to Waterford Regional Hospital.

He was pronounced dead on arrival.

A 35-year-old man was arrested nearby and is currently detained under the provisions of Section 4 of The Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Waterford Garda Station.

The scene is currently preserved for a technical examination and the State Pathologist have been notified.

The Garda Technical Bureau is scheduled to attend the scene this morning.

Gardai wish to appeal to witnesses who may have been in the New Street/ John Street area between 3am and 4am this morning to contact them at the incident room in Waterford Garda Station on 051- 305300, The Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
