Man under armed guard after siege

A man arrested for the murder of his ex-wife after a near eight-hour stand-off with gardai remains under armed guard in hospital.

Patricia Kierans, a 54-year-old mother of four, was found shot dead in her former family home on the outskirts of in Bailieborough, Co Cavan, on Thursday night.

Her estranged husband Oliver, who barricaded himself in a pub armed with a shotgun, was arrested in the early hours of yesterday morning after trained garda negotiators brought the stand-off to an end.

A Garda spokesman said he was in Cavan General Hospital after he was taken for medical attention yesterday.

When released, he can be questioned for up to seven days.

Mrs Kierans was no longer living with her husband at the family home in Drumbannon and had been living with her sister for some time.

Three of their four children have emigrated to Australia and the fourth was travelling to meet his siblings when he was told the news.

The alarm was raised at 6pm on Thursday when the victim's sister reported her missing at Bailieborough Garda station.

Officers went to the Square Bar in the town to speak to Mrs Kierans' estranged husband at 7pm and the 56-year-old emerged from the basement brandishing a fireman and threatened gardai.

Gardai have appealed for pub customers and anyone who spotted anything suspicious around the house since 10am that morning to come forward.
