Mildest February for ten years

After the biting cold winter, February was one of the mildest for around a decade in most parts of the country.

Met Eireann said it was also wetter than usual, particularly in the West and Midlands, where it was the wettest February since 2002 in some areas.

In Claremorris, Co Mayo it was the rainiest end to winter since 1997.

But forecasters said it was the warmest February for between nine and 13 years almost everywhere.

The sharp turn in temperatures was down to a shift in weather conditions, coming off the Atlantic rather then from the Arctic during the preceding months.

And while there was a dull, windy start to the month, sunshine levels were also above normal almost everywhere, particularly towards the end of the month.

December was one of the coldest months on record in Ireland, with temperatures dropping below minus 15C in some areas just before Christmas.
