Murder probe over dead Wexford OAP

A murder investigation has been launched after the killing of a pensioner who was suffocated.

The victim, named locally as Walter Plunkett, was found dead outside his house at Ballyedmond, Monamolin, Co Wexford, on Sunday.

A Garda spokesman said a post-mortem examination established that the 84-year-old died as a result of asphyxiation.

A 50-year-old woman, who was known to the victim, was arrested at the scene and remains in Garda custody after undergoing medical treatment.

Gardai at Enniscorthy have appealed for any information in relation to the man's death.

His body was removed to Waterford Regional Hospital where a post-mortem examination took place today by State Pathologist Professor Marie Cassidy. The scene has been preserved for a full technical examination by the Garda Technical Bureau.
