Navy Seaman dies after accident

A member of the Irish Navy has died following an accident while on shore leave.

The body of 34-year-old Leading Seaman Robert O'Keefe was found in the water at Schull, Co Cork in the early hours of Sunday, according to the Defence Forces.

The alarm was raised when the sailor failed to return to his ship - the LE Aisling - at an agreed hour.

He was given medical attention on board and taken to Bantry Hospital but attempts to resuscitate him failed.

A Defence Forces spokesman said there were no suspicious circumstances at this stage.

"The exact details of what happened are yet to be established but the Naval Service are liaising with local Gardai on the matter who feel that Robert's death was a tragic accident," he said.

Leading Seaman O'Keefe is survived by his partner Moira and their five children who live near Mallow, Co Cork.
