New York Irish arts centre expands

An Irish arts and cultural centre in New York has announced plans to build a new state-of-the-art facility next year.

The Irish Arts Centre announced that its current West 51st Street location will be expanded to include a 199-seat theatre, as well as technology that will allow programming to be projected outside its four walls.

The new centre will have a music venue and cafe, a dance studio and rehearsal space, classrooms, space for visual arts and a community garden.

The centre said that construction on the new building is expected to begin early next year. It is slated to open in 2016.

The centre was founded in 1972.
