A suspect has been accused of killing a man from Northern Ireland during an argument at a taxi rank in Tramore, Co Waterford, last summer.

Niall Hewison (23), of Clarinwood in the town, was yesterday charged with the manslaughter of Edmund Rice (54), who died following the row at a cab stand in the early hours of June 24 last year.

Mr Rice was a former bouncer originally from Coleraine, but he had been living in Waterford for a number of years.

Both men had been socialising in the town prior to the death of Mr Rice, who was a father-of-four.

Last year Mr Hewison was charged with assaulting Mr Rice, causing him harm.

However, a Garda officer told Waterford District Court Judge Kevin Staunton that the accused would now be charged with manslaughter.

Mr Hewison entered a new €1,000 bail bond. Judge Staunton forwarded him for trial.

The accused was sent forward to a sitting of the circuit court next week.
