Pedestrian killed in car accident in Co Galway

A 28-year-old man has died after being struck by a car in Loughrea, Co Galway.

The accident happened on the N66 Loughrea to Galway Road shortly after 5.30am on Sunday.

The male pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body was taken to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe where a post-mortem examination is to be arranged.

The 19-year-old male driver, who was travelling alone, was not hurt.

The road has been closed to facilitate Garda forensic collision investigators and diversions are in place.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses and are keen to hear from anyone who may have travelled through Loughrea town between 1.30am and 5.30am on Sunday.
