Pensioner killed in road crash

A pensioner has been killed in a road crash in Co Kerry.

A car and van collided on the R577 between Scartaglen and Ballydesmond, near Tralee, at 3.15pm on Wednesday.

The driver and sole occupant of the car, a man in his 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The people travelling in the second vehicle, a van, were taken to Tralee General Hospital with injuries described as minor.

Gardai have appealed for witnesses.

A spokesman said: "This stretch of road is currently closed for an examination by Garda forensic collision investigators and local diversions are in place."

Elsewhere, Gardai said a 70-year-old pedestrian died in hospital after she was hit by a van in south Dublin.

The accident happened on the N81 Tallaght Bypass at the junction of the Old Bawn Road at 2.45pm.

"She was taken to Tallaght Hospital and then transferred to Beaumont Hospital where she subsequently died this evening," a spokesman added.

"Gardai are appealing for witnesses."
