A Catholic priest who told his west Belfast congregation he did not believe the Pope should come to Ireland has said an "intense and emotional" meeting between clerical sex abuse victims and Francis was "powerful".

Father Patrick McCafferty, the parish priest of Corpus Christi Parish in Ballymurphy, said yesterday that the meeting in Dublin on Saturday was "a real encounter with human beings" and that the Pope was "visibly distressed" by what he heard.

"There was no protocol, no minding our 'Ps' and 'Qs'," he explained.

"It was full and frank, and the Pope responded unequivocally, expressing his shame, taking full responsibility as the visible earthly head of the Catholic Church, saying clearly 'I am responsible', and asking for our forgiveness. It was powerful."

Fr McCafferty was one of eight abuse survivors who met the Pope at the Papal Nunciate for an intense private discussion which lasted for 90 minutes.

They were representing the Mother and Baby Homes, Magdalene Laundries, and victims of institutional and clerical sex abuse, including Fr McCafferty himself.

The only other person present at the meeting was a young priest who acted as a translator. Fr McCafferty said last night of the meeting with Francis: "He talked about the corruption in the Church which is a source of great distress to him, and which he is determined to address despite attempts to undermine him and to thwart his reforms."

Fr McCafferty, a regular contributor to the Belfast Telegraph, said they had told Pope Francis that the people are fully behind him in his efforts.

"We told him that justice needs to be seen to be done, and that even the most high-ranking of prelates must not be exempt from just penalties when they cover up crimes of abuse or deal with it incompetently," he said.

"He was visibly distressed at some of the stories he was hearing. He listened attentively, and asked questions for clarification because he wanted to understand as fully as possible.

"His interpreter translated from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English, and he gave to the Pope and also to us the real sense of what was being communicated.

"All of us agreed that the Pope was entirely sincere, and appeared resolved to continue the work of healing, purification and reform, without fear or favour."

Earlier last week Fr McCafferty had called for the papal visit to be cancelled following further evidence of clerical sex abuse in the US and elsewhere, but it turned out that he was able to make his points directly to the Pope himself in Dublin.

Summing up the meeting, Fr McCafferty said: "The encounter with the Pope was intense and emotional. He was fully present to us. Deep hurt, real anger, immense sorrow and raw emotions were expressed. The Pope too was obviously affected by what he heard."

One of those who had welcomed the Pope to Ireland on his arrival at Dublin Airport was Cardinal Sean Brady, who is Archbishop Emeritus of Armagh.

In the mid-1970s he was involved in interviewing two boys abused by notorious Northern Ireland-born paedophile priest Brendan Smyth. The children were sworn to secrecy as part of the inquiry.

Cardinal Brady resigned as all-Ireland primate in 2014, although the findings had emerged four years earlier.

The father of one man whose son was abused by a Co Down priest said Dr Brady should not have been the one to welcome the Pope.

The man, who cannot be identified to protect his son, told the Sunday Mirror: "He's part of the problem and should not be honoured with the position. The sight of him there horrified, stunned and sickened me to the core."

Yesterday thousands of people took to the streets of Dublin city centre in protests against the visit of Francis.

Victims of clerical abuse gave emotional testimony at a demonstration at the General Post Office on O'Connell Street organised by the Say Nope to the Pope group.

A short time later, a larger crowd of several thousand assembled at the Garden of Remembrance for the Time for Truth rally.

It was organised by clerical abuse survivor Colm O'Gorman, who said the turnout surpassed his expectations. He told those assembled they were there to "stand for the truth".

Belfast singer Brian Kennedy was among the artists who gave performances.

Kennedy sang John Lennon's classic Imagine, before adding a new verse to the song.

He told the crowd to cheers: "I am singing this in the direction of Phoenix Park from this stage

Kennedy then sang the new verse: "Imagine there's no paedophiles, I wonder if you can."
