President to have knee surgery
President Michael D Higgins is to have surgery on his knee, it has been confirmed.
The president, who had previously injured his leg, is to have repair surgery in hospital in Galway.
He is due to attend the Bon Secours Hospital on Tuesday.
The president said he would return to his official residence within a week to spend Christmas with his family.
A spokesperson said the president's programme of engagements, for the remainder of the Christmas period, will continue after his return.
Mr Higgins, 70, discussed his injury during the course of the presidential election campaign and was seen to have had a limp.
He suffered the injury during an aid trip to Colombia last year when he slipped and fell.
