More than two million euro of illegal cigarettes have been seized by Revenue officials at Rosslare Europort.

Three million L&M-branded cigarettes were discovered when a Polish-registered lorry was stopped and searched by Revenue officers after arriving by ferry from Cherbourg in France on Monday.

The cigarettes, which were concealed in the load, were found using an X-ray machine.

A Polish man in his 30s was questioned in connection with the haul and investigations are ongoing.

Revenue said the cigarettes have a retail value of almost 2.1 million euro and represent a potential loss to the Exchequer of more than 1.6 million euro.

The seizure is part of an ongoing operation targeting the importation of illegal cigarettes.

If anyone has any information about smuggling they are asked to contact the Revenue’s confidential phone number 1800-295-295.
