River body is missing teenager

A body recovered in the Avoca River in Wicklow has been formally identified as missing teenager James Sheehan, gardai said.

The 18-year-old's remains were recovered by search teams on Thursday afternoon.

He disappeared in the early hours of Sunday after a night out in the town.

A garda spokesman said a post-mortem examination will be held in Loughlinstown Hospital to determine the cause of death.

Mr Sheehan, from Ballyduff Road in Arklow, was last seen leaving Sally O'Brien's nightclub at 2.38am on Sunday.

CCTV from business premises in the town revealed he then walked down Condren's Lane.

More than 100 volunteers, the Garda Water Unit, Civil Defence and Boyne Fishermen River - who found the body - joined Mr Sheehan's family and friends in the search operation.

A Garda spokesman later confirmed Mr Sheehan died of drowning.

There will be no garda investigation into his death.
