Search for missing helicopter crew ends

By Rory Tevlin

The extensive search operation for two missing crew members from the Rescue 116 helicopter tragedy around Blackrock Island has concluded.

Paul Ormbsy (53) and Ciaran Smith (38) are still missing following the tragic crash on March 14 that claimed the lives of their colleagues Captain Dara Fitzpatrick and Captain Mark Duffy.

In a statement yesterday, the Department of Transport thanked all those who had helped the search around Blacksod Bay, Co Mayo.

It confirmed that the search operation had finished yesterday afternoon when the Granuaile departed Blacksod Bay.

Superintendent Tony Healy said that the Garda water unit would conduct diving searches in the vicinity of Blackrock Lighthouse as soon as wind and tidal conditions are considered suitable.
