Shot fired in bid to steal ATM

Armed raiders have opened fire on gardai in an attempted theft of an ATM machine.

The shooting happened at about 3.30am when a gang tried to remove the cash machine from an Ulster Bank branch in Enniscorthy, Co Wexford.

Gardai said one shot was fired.

Three men are believed to have been involved. Gardai said they fled the scene in a dark coloured car.

No-one was injured in the shooting.

Gardai said one of the three men involved opened fire with a handgun at uniformed officers.

Two other members of the gang were seen coming out of the bank on Rafter Street in the town, gardai said.

Cash was taken in the raid and the suspects fled the scene in a black high powered estate car.
