Six Garda stations to reopen after review

Six Garda stations are to reopen following a review, the justice minister has said.

The report was commissioned after a Programme for Government pledge.

More than 130 stations closed during the recession.

Former stations at Stepaside and Rush in Dublin; Leighlinbridge, Co Carlow; Donard, Co Wicklow; Ballinspittle, Co Cork; and Bawnboy, Co Cavan, will reopen.

Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Josepha Madigan, said: "This is a Christmas wish come true for the area (Stepaside) and means the whole community can look forward to a safer new year with a dedicated Garda presence back on our streets.

"It has always been my view that the closure of Stepaside Garda station was the wrong decision."

A decision earlier this year to announce the reopening of Stepaside was criticised and the opposition claimed there was political interference.
