Suspect arrested over death of man found unconscious on Christmas Day

Gardai investigating the death of a man found unconscious in a city street on Christmas Day have made an arrest.

The victim, in his 20s, was discovered with serious head injuries in Margaret's Avenue, Waterford, at around 8pm.

Initially, it was not clear whether the injuries were sustained through a stumble or if he had been assaulted.

The victim died from his wounds on Wednesday evening at Waterford University Hospital.

Investigating gardai said they have arrested a man in his 40s in connection with the death.

He is being held and questioned under section four of the Criminal Justice Act at Waterford Garda Station.

A post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out by state pathologist Marie Cassidy.

Gardai have appealed for witnesses.
