Tax take fall takes state into red

The Government books were 12.1 billion euro in the red last month, a fall of 6 billion euro on the same time last year, official figures have revealed.

The tax take was 1.9 billion euro lower than the same period last year at 18.9 billion euro, the Exchequer said.

The Department of Finance said three of the so-called big four tax-heads - VAT, corporation tax and excise duties - performed above expectations in the first eight months of the year.
