Three killed after horror car smash in Waterford

A trip to a Christmas festival ended in carnage when three people were killed and six more injured in a horrific road crash in the Republic.

Two cars, a small saloon and a people carrier, were involved in the head-on collision on Military Road outside Dungarvan in Waterford at 10am yesterday.

The smaller car exploded in an intense fireball seconds after impact, killing three men.

Gardai initially suspected two had died in the gutted car, but when they began a forensic examination of the vehicle they discovered a third body in the rear seat. All three deceased were young men and will need to be identified from dental records.

The adults travelling in the people carrier who were left injured have been named locally as Gary Fenton from Cobh and Mary Bermingham from Banteer.

Both were undergoing emergency surgery last night. Four children aged six to 14 in the people carrier were airlifted to Cork University Hospital and University Hospital Waterford.
