Toddler crushed to death in Cork farmyard

By Ralph Riegel

A toddler has died in a freak farm accident in west Cork.

The three-year-old boy died from crush injuries after apparently getting trapped beside a JCB in a farmyard.

The accident occurred shortly before 12pm on a farm outside Drimoleague.

Paramedics rushed the little boy to Bantry General hospital but, despite desperate efforts to stabilise his condition, he was pronounced dead.

Gardai said they are treating the matter as "a tragic accident."

The boy's family raced to be by his hospital bedside and the distraught family are now being comforted by relatives and friends.

In accordance with protocols, a Health & Safety Authority review will be carried out.

Locals described the incident as "absolutely heartbreaking".

The death is the latest in a high-profile series of fatal farm accidents across Ireland.

It is the second child to die from crush-related injuries on a farmyard in Cork in the space of three months.
