Toddler dies in fall from flats

An 18-month-old girl has died after falling from a third floor window of a Dublin apartment block.

The toddler fell from the Tolka Valley building in Finglas at around 9.30am.

Her parents, who are from eastern Europe, rushed the child to the city's Mater Hospital in a taxi but she could not be saved and was declared dead at 10.30am

Gardai said they were investigating the incident.

The north Dublin apartment block, which is close to the river Tolka, contains a mix of rented and privately owned residences.

Last April, 21-month-old Sebastian Pereira Kus died when he fell from a fourth floor window of an apartment block in Inchicore in west Dublin.

Earlier this summer a two-year-old boy escaped serious injury when he fell from the balcony of an apartment in Tallaght in south Dublin.

Finglas councillor John Redmond said the community was in shock at the girl's death.

"It's tragic, just tragic that such a thing like that could have happened," said the Labour party representative.

"My sympathies go to the family involved. I have a granddaughter myself, just one year old, and I can only imagine what the family are going through.

"It's an absolute tragedy."

Fellow councillor for the area Dr Bill Tormey also passed his condolences to the family.

"It's such a massive tragedy for an 18-month child to fall from a window like this," added the Fine Gael representative.

"It is just so shocking. It is dreadful for the family."
