Tributes paid to pedestrian killed on his way home

By Greg Harkin

Tributes have been paid to a pedestrian knocked down and killed on his way home from a night out.

Kieran Doherty was killed instantly when he was struck by a car while walking home in the early hours of yesterday morning close to his home in Stranorlar, Co Donegal. He was "dedicated" to caring for his elderly parents, friends said.

Gardai have launched an investigation into the incident which happened around 2.50am on the Letterkenny Road near McClay's Corner.

It is understood that Mr Doherty, a single man who was in his mid-60s, had been out with friends earlier and was walking home to his house at Admiran Park.

Described as a "quiet, civil man", Mr Doherty had worked in his parents' shop in Ballybofey before it closed.

Councillor Patrick McGowan said Mr Doherty was very well-known and such a tragedy happening on Easter Sunday had left a shadow over the area.

"It's such a shame that a man in his later years would pass away like this," he said.
