As Father Ted writer Graham Linehan confirmed the breakup of his marriage last week, he said he would rather be writing about farce than living through one.

The past few years have seen him become less aligned with acclaimed comedy writing - the Craggy Island sitcom and The IT Crowd are two of his most celebrated creations - and instead become entrenched in quarrels and debate.
