The accident happened on a straight stretch of road. One local report said one car may have come off a side road into the path of the other.

Local Fine Gael councillor Seamus Langan last night said "it's a very busy road. People use it heading down to Navan.

"It is an awful tragedy to happen in the area. We don't have all the full details on what exactly happened yet.

"I'd like to pass on my condolences to the families involved," he added.
