Two people were killed in car accidents on the same day Ireland was praised for record improvements in road safety.

In the first incident, a 41-year-old man driving on the N81 in Wicklow was killed in a two-car crash at Hempstown, Blessington.

A second man suffered minor injuries in the accident, which happened at about 8.30pm on Tuesday.

In the second, a 75-year-old woman died following a two-car collision in Co Kerry.

She was a passenger in one of the cars which crashed at about 10.45pm on the Castlemaine to Firies village road.

On the same day, Ireland was ranked sixth in Europe for its road safety record after virtually halving the number of deaths in the last decade.

There were 212 road fatalities last year.
