Two people killed in Co Louth crash

Two people have been killed when the car they were travelling in crashed into a fence on a motorway.

The accident happened on the southbound lane of the M1 near Milltown, Co Louth, at around 4.30am.

The 22-year-old male driver and a 17-year-old girl died at the scene.

No-one else was in the car and no other vehicles were involved.

Three people were killed in a crash earlier this week, including a pregnant woman.

Roisin Connolly and her unborn daughter, who was named Catherine, and friends Glen Curtis and Paul Carroll died in a three-car crash on Monday.

Gardai have urged people to exercise caution on the roads in 2011 as 212 people lost their lives in accidents last year.

The number of drivers, cyclists and pedestrians killed has fallen in recent years, from 396 in 2005 to 238 in 2009.

Ten people died on the roads last month, compared with 18 during December 2009.
