Detectives investigating dissident republicans are questioning two men after the seizure of a firearm.
The pair - aged in their 40s and 50s - were arrested during an operation in Dundalk involving the Garda's armed regional support unit.
The man in his 40s was detained after officers stopped and searched a car on Point Road in the Co Louth town as part of a planned operation yesterday.
A rifle was recovered during the search.
In a follow up operation, a man in his late 50s was arrested during a raid on a house in the Dundalk area.
Both men are being held under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act at Dundalk Garda station.
A Garda spokesman said: "Enquiries are ongoing."
