The officer is currently recovering in University Hospital Limerick, after the incident occurred on Friday,  May 11 at approximately 6:50pm.

CCTV footage shows that the jeep pursued by Gardaí lost control and collided with a sign post.

The video shows the officer exiting his own vehicle and running towards  the jeep as it reverses and drove away at speed with the garda holding onto the left passenger door.

A colleague of the officer is seen following behind the jeep in a garda car as the garda clings for his life, eventually the garda is seen to fall off after being attached to the door for several metres.

A Garda spokesperson said:  "Gardaí initially responded to a call in relation to a possible drink driver in the Birdhill area at 5.50pm. Gardaí observed a man entering a jeep. The driver failed to stop and drove towards Birdhill.

"At a junction in Birdhill, a car lost control and collided with a sign post. A Garda officer approached the vehicle and was injured when the jeep reversed and drove towards the Limerick road at speed.

"A man in his 50's was subsequently arrested and was detained at Nenagh Garda Station.
