Watchdog probes Limerick car crash

The Garda watchdog is investigating a car crash which claimed the lives of two men.

A third man was injured when the car they were travelling in hit a tree in Co Limerick on Tuesday night.

A Garda spokesman confirmed that because an officer had observed the car shortly before the collision, and had turned his vehicle to follow it, the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) was notified.

It is understood the car had been stolen before the crash happened on the N21 between Rathkeale and Croagh at about 9.30pm.

GSOC investigators and forensic officers were at the scene, which remained closed.

The dead men were in their 20s and the third man, who is recovering in the Mid Western Regional Hospital, is in his 30s.

Any witnesses or anyone with information is urged to come forward.
