Witness plea as girl (13) raped in Wicklow town

By Fiona Ellis

Gardai are appealing for witnesses after a young girl was raped in broad daylight.

The 13-year-old girl was attacked and raped in a laneway in Wicklow town at around 3pm on Saturday.

The youngster was on her way to a local shop when she was set upon by two men.

She was attacked in an open laneway as she took a short cut between Broadlough and Crinion Park housing estates near where she lived.

She was snatched and grabbed from the path by two men believed to be in their late teens or early 20s before being beaten and raped.

A full scale garda investigation has now been launched in a bid to find the individuals and gardai are making door to door inquiries in the estates.

They have issued an appeal for information and have asked anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area on Saturday to contact them.

After the attack the girl was taken to the sexual assault unit at the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin and is at home now recovering from her injuries.

Gardai are urging anyone with information to contact Wicklow Garda Station on 0404 67107 or the Garda Confidential Helpline on 1800 666 111.
