Woman killed in sand dune collapse
A 19-year-old woman has died after a sand dune collapsed on her in west Kerry.
Niamh McCarthy, from Minane Bridge, south Cork, was visiting the Maharees near Castlegregory on the Dingle Peninsula when the accident happened at around 3.30pm on Tuesday.
It is understood a hole had been dug and a number of people had been jumping from the top of the 10 metre dune when it caved in.
The victim is believed to have been buried under the sand for up to 15 minutes before her friends were able to free her.
Her family is understood to have held a vigil by her bedside at Kerry General Hospital through the night, but the teenager later died.
Gardai have launched an investigation into the death.
