Young musician dies in assault

A young musician died after he was viciously assaulted by a gang who tried to steal his car as he slept in it.

Gavin O'Connor was attacked in the early hours of Saturday morning in Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan.

The 22-year-old suffered serious injuries before he was dumped about three miles away in the village of Lisdoonan.

A man in his late teens was due to appear before a special sitting of Cavan District Court this evening in connection to the incident.

Mr O'Connor died in Our Lady Of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, late on Saturday night.

Gardai are investigating if he was driven over by his own vehicle.

The tragedy shocked locals, who were celebrating the popular Carrickmacross Festival.

Mr O'Connor lived with his parents in Ballynaclose, Kilmainhamwood, on the Cavan/Meath border. He played guitar for a local band called Climax.

Carrickmacross councillor Padraig Nally condemned the incident and appealed for anyone with information to contact gardai.
