Santa kicks off Larne's Christmas countdown

By Claire Williamson

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Larne.

With a little bit of help from a star of The Fall and Santa Claus himself, the east Antrim town was full of festive cheer.

Actress Bronagh Waugh, who plays Holywood-born Jamie Dornan's on-screen wife in the dark crime drama was full of smiles as she led the seasonal festivities in the town last night.

The television star, who has become a household name after appearing in Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks as well as the Belfast-based thriller, was rewarded for turning the lights on when Santa Claus presented her with a goodie bag of locally crafted gifts and souvenirs.

Ms Waugh took to the stage to whip the crowd in to a merry frenzy and she even had a little dance with the Mayor of Larne Martin Wilson as they welcomed the festive cheer. The community came together to put the harbour town's recent woes - many inhabitants felt aggrieved at Larne's portrayal in a BBC docomentary - behind them and at the flick of a switch, Christmas had arrived.

Young and old, wrapped up in hats and scarves, could barely contain their excitement as the famous man in the big red coat appeared in the town, with many children taking the opportunity to give him a gentle reminder of what they hope to get.

And if it didn't feel like Christmas time yet, cameras were at the ready as a walking, green Christmas tree danced around the crowd.
