Shot fired during armed robbery

Staff at a Belfast building society narrowly escaped injury after a shot was fired during an armed robbery.

Shortly before 2pm yesterday a man armed with a handgun entered the premises on Cregagh Road in the east of the city and demanded cash.

There were no reports of any injuries, however staff are said to have been shaken by the ordeal. Police confirmed the robber made off empty-handed.

About half-an-hour earlier a man armed with a handgun entered a bank on Upper Newtownards Road, also in east Belfast, and demanded cash. He made his escape with a small sum of money.

A spokesman for the PSNI said one man had been arrested in connection with this robbery.

East Belfast councillor and District Policing Partnership member Jim Rodgers said it was lucky no one was killed. He said: “There is a desperation to get money and I expect there will be more of this type of incident.”
