Suspect to appear in court charged with murdering man 23 years ago

A man has been charged with a murder which took place 23 years ago in east Belfast.

The 51-year-old man was arrested at an address in Manchester on Tuesday morning in connection with the murder of Stanley Close.

Mr Close (64) was strangled in his home at Canton Court in the Willowfield area of east Belfast on August 25 1986.

Mr Close had previously served 10 years for the manslaughter of 30-year-old bricklayer Kevin Keilty in the Pavilion Bar on the Ormeau Road in July 1971.

A psychiatrist told the court at the time of the trial Mr Close was probably “temporarily insane” when he shot Mr Keilty three times in the bar.

On the day before Mr Close’s body was discovered in 1986 a couple were seen leaving his flat.

Forensic evidence revealed that blood stains found on the bedroom floor, bed sheet and curtains did not match the deceased’s blood group.
