Tearful scenes at drowned teen’s funeral

The death of a Londonderry teenager after he jumped into a swollen river while fleeing police has left a deep scar running through his young friends and community, mourners at his funeral have been told.

Kyle Bonnes (15) was laid to rest yesterday amid emotional scenes when many of his friends gathered for the funeral service wearing Rangers tops bearing the teenager’s name.

Speaking to mourners at Glendermott Presbyterian Church in Londonderry, the Rev John Hanna said the youngster’s death had had a profound effect on the Tullyally community where he lived.

Young Kyle was swept to his death by flood waters after he jumped into the River Faughan in the village of Drumahoe.

He entered the fast-flowing river on April 7 in a bid to escape two PSNI officers who had been called to the village following reports of a disturbance. The Police Ombudsman is investigating the circumstances of his death.
