Teenager charged after assault

A 19-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder and causing grevious bodily harm with intent following an assault which left a young man fighting for his life in hospital.

The youth is expected to appear at Newry Magistrate Court today but, as with normal procedure, the charges are subject to review by the Public Prosecution Service.

The 20-year-old victim suffered serious head injuries after being attacked on Rathfriland Road in Newry.

The assault took place between 9pm and 10pm on Wednesday. Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward. They can be contacted on 0845 600 8000.
