13 people discovered in the back of a lorry

By Fran Yeoman

One person was taken to hospital after 13 suspected illegal immigrants were found in the back of a lorry at the Dartford Crossing in Kent yesterday.

Details of the nationalities and sexes of the people found were not immediately available, although no children were believed to have been among them.

A South East Coast Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the person who was taken to hospital was not believed to be in a life-threatening condition. "Our crews assessed 13 individuals at the scene. One required transportation to hospital and was taken to Darent Valley Hospital," she said.

Earlier this month, two Northern Irish lorry drivers, Stephen McLaughlin (34) of Limavady and Timothy Murphy (33) of Elmgrove, Londonderry, were charged with conspiring to facilitate illegal entry into the UK.

The charges came after 35 immigrants were found in a shipping container at Tilbury Docks in Essex. One of them, Meet Singh Kapoor (40) from Afghanistan, was found dead. The group are all believed to have fled Afghanistan after suffering persecution.
