24m watched wedding on BBC and ITV

More than 24 million viewers on average watched BBC One and ITV1 television coverage of Friday's royal wedding, broadcasters have said.

A BBC spokesman said 18.7 million people on average watched the marriage of William and Kate in Westminster Abbey on BBC One between 11.00 and 12.15, representing 67.2% of the audience share.

This figure rose to 19.2 million viewers, the corporation said, once viewers for the BBC News Channel and BBC One HD were taken into account.

ITV1 said 5.9 million on average watched the ceremony during the same time period with a peak of 6.1 million viewers as the wedding ceremony got under way.

The BBC said 9.8 million on average had watched BBC One between 8am and 11am. During that period, the audience grew steadily, with 17.5 million watching in the last 15 minutes. Between 12.15pm and the news at 1.45pm there was an average of 16.6 million viewers for BBC One, a spokesman said.

Viewing figures for BBC Television, including BBC1e, the BBC News Channel and BBC One HD, showed the audience peaked at 19.79 million or 70.6% of audience share, the corporation said. This figure rose to 20 million if BBC iPlayer viewing was taken into account.

Across the BBC as a whole, a total of 34.7 million people tuned in to watch some part of the royal wedding, the corporation added. More than a million people used BBC iPlayer to watch a portion of the royal wedding coverage, it said.

The BBC added that a total of 9.4 million people used the BBC's news website on Friday, with more than nine million viewing the page featuring live coverage of the wedding.

Mark Byford, who led BBC coverage of the wedding across TV, radio and online, said: "The huge audience of so many millions who shared the day with the BBC is a testament to all those involved in producing such high-quality and distinctive coverage, and proves once again that the BBC is the broadcaster of choice for audiences during big national events."

ITV's director of television Peter Fincham said: "We are delighted that more than six million viewers were watching ITV as the royal wedding ceremony got under way and are very pleased that the audience increasingly chose to stay with us during the afternoon, which also reflects the fantastic feedback we have had about our coverage."
