Baby killer tried to pin blame on tot’s mother

A man was jailed for life yesterday for murdering a “wholly defenceless and vulnerable” baby.

Mark Simpson (29) was sentenced to at least 20 years after being found guilty of killing six-week-old Alexis Matheson, daughter of his then partner.

At the High Court in Aberdeen, Lord Uist described him as a “devious and deceitful” character for seeking to pin the blame on mother Ilona Sheach.

The Crown Office announced a Fatal Accident Inquiry would be held into the child's death.

Simpson assaulted baby Alexis at his home in Aberdeen while the girl and her mother were living there.

Alexis was born on October 26 2007, but died less than two months later on December 10.

Following a 28-day trial the jury unanimously found him guilty of murder.

After the verdict, Ms Sheach said she was sickened by Simpson's attempt to blame her for the baby’s death.

She said: “Throughout our time together he never once mentioned any concerns he had with my handling of Alexis and knowing what he has now said, having taken almost three years to dream this up, really sickens me. Thankfully the jury saw through his lies.”
