Barge abandoned on footpath leaves council wardens high and dry
The owner of the barge found marooned on an industrial estate footpath in Smethwick has since been located.
Council wardens were left scratching their heads when they came across a narrowboat which had been left blocking a pavement.
The officers, more used to dealing with abandoned cars and fly-tipping, found the barge marooned on an industrial estate footpath in Smethwick in the West Midlands on Thursday.
The area, in Vittoria Street, is not far from the Birmingham canal.
Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council’s highways team said on Twitter: “Is anyone missing a barge?
Remember the mystery boat from yesterday? We've found the person responsible and are asking them to get it moved as quickly as is possible. pic.twitter.com/x8y0EXs7wW— Sandwell Council (@sandwellcouncil) August 25, 2017
“This one has been left in #Smethwick, our wardens are working to find the owner as we need to get this moved.”
After a social media appeal and some further investigations, however, the owner has now been traced and must “get it moved”.
David Hosell, the council’s highways and environment cabinet chief, said: “Our wardens have investigated this and have found the person responsible for the boat.
“We are asking them to get it moved as quickly as is possible.”
