BBC salary disclosure welcomed

News that the BBC is to disclose the salaries of senior employees who earn more than £150,000 has been welcomed by the DUP's Gregory Campbell.

The East Londonderry MP described the move as "a small initial step in the right direction" after BBC Trust chairman Lord Patten said he believed managers' "toxic" salaries were unpopular with licence fee payers.

Mr Campbell said the BBC had been "dragged kicking and screaming to this partial disclosure".

He said the corporation had been "quite content" to have presenters question politicians about pay, while refusing to disclose BBC salaries, although both come out of the public purse.

"This is an important first step which is long overdue," he said.
