Bookies suspend betting on the Queen announcing abdication on Christmas Day following rush of bets
A bookmaker has suspended betting on the Queen announcing her abdication in her Christmas Day speech, following a rush of bets this afternoon.
Coral was offering odds of 10-1 that the monarch would announce the decision to step down during her festive televised address, but claims today’s unusual gamble "set alarm bells ringing" and forced it to close the market altogether.
Coral’s Nicola McGeady said: “Throughout the year there has been major speculation about the Queen’s future but today’s gamble has really caught us by surprise.
“As far as we are concerned there’s no smoke without fire when bets like this come through all in succession, so we have decided to be safe rather than sorry and pull the plug on the market."
In January Coral suspended betting on the Queen abdicating before the end of 2014 following a large bet.
